From what I have been able to learn regarding the recent Twitter Problems there may not be a solution real soon. Talk has it that Twitter faced a  distribute denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that completely disabled the site.

Twitter has taken precautionary steps to keep the site up and running. But while performing these defensive steps many third party tools and API’s have been disabled as well. As has the user’s ability to tweet via SMS (short message service) text messages to cell phones.

From what Twitter has learned, there was a politically motivated hacker intent on silencing a Georgian activist. There were a number of other sites that were attacked as well as Twitter. Smaller social media sites and various blogs.

Twitter is doing everything they can to find a permanent solution that does not impact the third party applications. But as long as the attacks continue Twitter states they cannot guarantee things will get better. They are, however, doing everything they can do to ensure the site remains available.
